Andrew Kuykendall – Welcome to California, Entering Pacific Time
A weathered road sign rises out of the desert: Welcome to California – Entering Pacific Time. The image is simple, yet charged with the symbolism of crossing a threshold. Shot in the open expanse of the American West, Kuykendall’s photograph belongs to the long tradition of road photography—where the highway becomes both subject and metaphor.
The desert light is unforgiving yet sublime, bleaching colours into dusty tones, sharpening edges, and stretching shadows across the asphalt. It is the kind of light that Eggleston, Shore, or Sternfeld might have paused for—turning the mundane into a quiet monument. In Kuykendall’s hands, the road sign is not merely a marker of time zones, but a reminder of the endless motion of travel: the long drive, the heat shimmer, the sense of arrival that is always only temporary.
This is photography as journey—an image that holds the dust, the silence, and the promise of California waiting just beyond the horizon.
